Cuatro Cuatros collectible design Liminal Detail of Liminal table by Cuatro Cuatros

LIMINAL explores the boundaries of functionality through sculpture, based on a research at the intersection of art and design. LIMINAL arises from questions and reflections about this liminality: what happens when we take the reduction of functionality to the extreme in the design process? LIMINAL deconstructs the iconic shape of a table, recognizable and ingrained in the collective imagination, reducing its surface to a small plate where different objects and everyday elements can be consciously placed. This extreme reduction of functionality aims to raise awareness about our relationship with everyday objects and the mechanical gestures we perform with them, and how we often stop paying attention to them. Can a table be more than a surface to place things on? Can it be a piece of art that, ironically, makes us question its own utility? Edition: Unique (1/1). Inquire: hola@cuatrocuatros.com

Half Chair for Missana by Cuatro Cuatros Half Chair for Missana by Cuatro Cuatros

Half semi circular legs shaped in “halves” and seat perfectly complement each other. They end up creating a full circle when placed next to each other. Half chair is the beginning of an everything, an outstanding piece by itself and even more impressive as a whole, each chair visually completes the next one: the semi circular legs shaped in “halves”, backrest & seat complement each half making perfect full circles. A design inspired in the Gestalt psychology, in which “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. Half is a visual and elegant design that constantly plays with everyone’s perception. The perfect combination between the chairs and their visualization as an infinite whole, make Half a unique piece that creates a very appealing visual effect.

Trampolín is a three-seater bench which stands out of the crowd with its unique twist of the Bauhaus-inspired structure and the weightlessness of its seat and backrest, that seem to be suspended, almost floating, daring to surprise everyone’s perception. It keeps up the simple and schematic lines of the popular chair and bar stool, while introducing a remarkable touch with its structure, resulting in an exclusive and unique design. The Trampolín bench is mainly oriented to contract projects, offering new possibilities with a typology of seating very demanded in the hospitality and restaurant environments.

The Trampolín chair has grown up into a high end bar stool in which the characteristic schematic lines that define this sophisticated and comfortable product can still be appreciated. The Trampolin bar stool keeps intact all the attributes. Trampolín is a bar stool which structure dares to surprise everyones perception, a very functional, comfortable and schematic product, with a high contrast between horizontal and vertical perspectives that results in amazing diagonal lines that make it looks like it is actually suspended somehow.

Trampolín is a chair which structure dares to surprise everyones perception. We based our idea in a very functional, comfortable and schematic chair, a extremely chameleonic chair due to the wide variety of metal and fabric finishings to choose from. Stackable and with removable covers, its challenging structure seems to be suspended in a weightless state, almost floating.

#3 table by Cuatro Cuatros #3 table by Cuatro Cuatros

The auxiliary table #3 is made of grey «wood cement», a material composed of a mixture of pine wood and cement. It combines the flexibility of the wood with the durability of cement, in such way that allows its use both indoors and outdoors. The pieces present an inhomogeneous appearance, a natural characteristic of the material. Measurements disassembled: 37 x 43 x 5 cm (L x H x W) Weight: 4.2 Kg

#1#2#3 are three different auxiliary tables based on the Almohadilla (#) joining system, that also set up a group of stack tables. The main material is methacrylate, due to its neutrality and visual lightness. The upper surface varies, creating distinctive features between them:
#1 Marble surface. Classicism contradicts the informality of the methacrylate and cable ties.
#2 Cork surface where the user can leave hot mugs.
#3 Sketchbook. It is divided in two parts to empower its functionality. The user can draw, turn the pages and rip them out in one part, while objects can be left on the other.
The chosen materiales and measurements are an example of the infinite options that this joining system offers.

Are the horizontal lines parallel? The horizontal lines are distorted by the squares, so that they appear crooked. The effect caused by this perception is based on Zöllner illustration published in 1860. The modular shelving that comes from this illusion consists of shelves with grooves where the metallic structures are fitted. The different position of the clefts in each shelf allows the displacement of the squares to create the effect. The plate has four possible positions, so it can be accessible from both sides of the shelf. The shelving can be also used as a room divider. You can choose the height depending on how many rows you stack.

Is this an impossible triangle? The interposition, orientation and perspective create a contradiction of the space that makes us perceive something that is not. It comes from the Penrose experience. 90 ° is a vase that, based on a drawing, has been converted to a geometrical shape with volume. Depending on the point of view, both ends coincide and make it look like a closed figure.

Is A longer than B? This is what we perceive as a consequence of an optical illusion. In Sander’s parallelogram, A is just as long as B. Our interpretation of this illusion is shaped on a modular shelf, where A and B are identical trays that we can exchange (taking them out of the shelf). There are two types of trays for different functions, one of them places and holds books, and the other type divides the space of the shelf. Its shape helps to create several compositions.

Are these lines parallel? The decomposition of the lines in geometric shapes and alternating black and white, makes them look crooked, even though they are parallel. The illustration is an interpretation Zöllner effect published in 1860. The application of the illustration to the carpet preserves its graphical power. The texture of the carpet creates an imperfection that adds attractiveness. The square shape and size allow this carpet to be used as a modular product.
